Creating a Hummingbird Haven with Georgia Native Plants

Turn your yard into a sanctuary for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds using native tubular flowers and tiered landscaping.

    Nectar for the Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the only species that breeds in the eastern United States, and Georgia is a critical part of their range. These tiny dynamos arrive in our area in mid-April, having migrated thousands of miles. To thrive, they need high-energy nectar from flowers that have co-evolved with their long bills and tongues.

The best native plants for hummingbirds in Georgia are those with red or orange tubular flowers. Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is widely considered the top hummingbird plant in the Southeast. Its brilliant red spikes bloom in late summer and are perfectly shaped for hummingbird feeding.

Other essential plants include Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)—a non-invasive native vine that provides early season nectar—and Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica), which lights up shady spots in spring. By planting a variety of these species, you can ensure hummingbirds stay in your garden all season long.
